How long have you been working in tech so far?
I've been working for seven months.
Are you on the East Coast or West Coast?
I'm from the East Coast. I went to college in Denver, Colorado. I left and came back, and I'm still in Colorado, which is in the middle of the US.
Do you have any technical background?
I didn't have a technical background before the Careerist course.
What happened after the training?
After I completed the program, I followed exactly what the Careerist team said. I joined the internship and then literally just followed directions. Now I can tell everyone it does work.
Your system works. If something isn't working, contact your Career Coach because they are familiar with your situation. Coaches can always help with mastering interviewing skills, your resume, and your LinkedIn profile. So the coach is someone you have to contact if you have any issues.
What is your key advice to your fellow students?
Just listen to them and follow the guidance because it does work. And also keep applying, as much as you can, and keep it going. It kind of does lag at first, but then you will start getting calls and interviews, and it will happen. Just keep going and don't stop. I'm proof it does work.
You might even come to a point when you're like, what's even happening with me? I experienced the same thing: I was applying and applying, with no calls, but then it did happen. The calls started coming and then kept coming. I just kept getting emails and calls from recruiters via LinkedIn.
The same thing will happen over and over again. The interviewing gets easier the more you practice the same thing. So keep practicing, even in front of the mirror. Confidence is a huge thing too. Be confident. People want to work with confident, happy people, so keep that in mind.
And when did you start seeing the calls?
I probably started getting calls within two months of when I started applying.
How long was your tech job search?
I would say it was probably around three months. Overall, I got five offers within a week and a half. So that was the culmination when everything came together; companies were actually wanting me and kind of fighting over me. That moment was around the three-and-a-half-month mark. Well, that was the whole interviewing experience.
How much did you get?
So the offer I got was over $100,000. It was $105,000, which is totally cool and okay for the US. I checked the salaries online before doing an interview to know what numbers I could negotiate. I was studying the situation for Denver: the average and the range.
So what was your secret to getting a $100K job?
First, I knew the questions and talking points very well. These talking points are your knowledge base, which will help you to show you know how to test and what testing is. I had to talk about Jira once, which obviously is a huge talking point, and also about doing test cases. I also knew TestRail well.
How has it been during the last seven months? Has it been challenging?
No. There are things I don't know as well, but I really enjoy the team I work with. Everyone's very intelligent, but no one's on your back. They give you time to figure things out, so if I don't know something, I can go to a coworker, and they can explain it to me. If they can't, they will show me where I can look it up. We have access to certain resources within our company to learn further. That's nice when you are basically either shown or guided. I've also reached out to you guys for a couple of things, too, and you got back to me, which was great as well.
